United Visual Artists creates this year’s Onedotzero identity

United Visual Artists has designed this year’s identity for moving image festival Onedotzero, using laser technology to make a moving typographic sequence.

Founder and creative director of Onedotzero Shane Walter commissioned UVA in August, asking it to develop an identity (still pictured) which could also be physically extrapolated to become an installation at the festival.

As well as the moving image sequence, a still version of the identity will also be used by Onedotzero.

Each year an identity is commissioned, which has in recent years been designed by Troika, Logan, Alex Rutterford and Wieden & Kennedy with Karsten Schmidt.

Walter says, ‘I wanted to challenge UVA; they’ve never done an identity before. I also commissioned their first public installation in 2006.’

Walter adds, ‘They’ve responded in a typographic way using light which is the basis of film making – a lot of what we show uses light. So they’ve used lasers in an old warehouse which looks quite distinctive.’ Sound designer Nick Ryan has made an accompanying soundscape.

An additional ‘companion piece,’ Horizon, has been designed by UVA as an installation for the festival, says Walter. It will sit in a dedicated space in the BFI Southbank.

Walter says this will ‘reduce the flickering line of the cinema to a single scan line, referencing the laser technology used in the identity, but also reveal something’.

This will involve data  being projected onto the visitor’s retina through a narrow slit.

Onedotzero runs from 23-27 November 2011 at the BFI Southbank.
