Marc Newson joins Apple

UK-based designer Marc Newson is joining Sir Jony Ive’s Apple design team and is taking the role of ‘designer, special projects’.

There is speculation that Newson, who has worked on several watch designs, has contributed to Apple’s wearable technology product, which is expected to launch on 9 September. A spokeswoman for Newson says that the designer has been working with Ive and his team on Apple projects for the past year.

Australian-born industrial designer Newson has worked on designs including airline interiors for Qantas, restaurants and retail interiors and the Lockheed chair – one of which sold for £1.1 million at auction in 2009.

Newson and Ive have been friends for many years, and collaborated to create a collection of items for U2 singer Bono’s (RED) auction last year.

Ive says, ‘Marc is without question one of the most influential designers of this generation. He is extraordinarily talented. We are particularly excited to formalise our collaboration as we enjoy working together so much and have found our partnership so effective.’

Newson says, ‘I’m full of admiration and respect for the extraordinary design work that has been produced by Jony and the team at Apple.

‘My close friendship with Jony has not only given me a unique insight into that process, but the opportunity to work together with him and the people that have been responsible. I am enormously proud to join them.’

A spokeswoman for Newson says that the designer will continue to work on independent projects outside his Apple brief, and that it is ‘business as usual’ at the London-based Marc Newson consultancy.

That’s a nicely put together video considering both of the designers and the musicians PR objectives from the whole project. However, on another note, I still can’t get that bloody U2 album off my iPhone.
