McBess won a pitch against several shortlisted illustrators following a competition. He says, ‘They wanted to use the equaliser logo as a base for the design and said reinterpret the logo in your own way.

‘Using an isometric grid I transformed the bars of the grid into a huge world of madness.’

McBess has delivered six poster ads, which will be used on the Paris Metro, (the Deezer service originated from France) and elements of these will be extrapolated for use online – on social networks and on Deezer itself.

There is also a 30-second animated brand video (seen on Deezer here), which McBess has illustrated the key frames for.

All of the work makes the connection to the brand’s five-colour mark in contrast to the signature black and white style of McBess.

Deezer’s slogans include ‘now nothing will stop the music’ and ‘unlimited music for computer tablet and mobile’ – themes that McBess has looked to represent.

‘The overall effect is dark, dynamic and a little risqué – like an old-fashioned Betty Boop cartoon with a rock n roll vibe – which suits the Deezer brand perfectly,’ says McBess.
