MiddleBoop’s charity music festival graphics

Illustrator and designer Gordon Reid, aka MiddleBoop, has created the visuals for Freedom From Torture’s upcoming music festival, bringing pop-orientated graphics to seven different posters, as well as the charity’s website, logo, twitter pages, invites, T-shirts and tote bags.

The visuals feature pleasingly symmetrical arrangements of shapes in block colours, from boom-boxes and keyboards to lollipop trees and clouds, merging geometric shapes with curved corners to give a kaleidoscopic appeal.

Neon brights are slightly muted to avoid an acidic overdose, and imagery of multicoloured cables and piping act as a neat framing device, setting the stage.

The graphics maintain a sense of lightness alongside the charity’s more serious purpose, with the central reoccurrence of their logo: raised palms, overlapped like wings. MiddleBoop has adjusted the logo to the mood of the festival by applying a range of dual colour combinations, coordinated according to the surrounding palette.

In accordance with the line-up, the posters relate to different seasons and time of day. An event featuring edgy opera and Kafka is graphically located at the dead of night, whilst band Bombay Bicycle Club finds itself drawn into a sunny Autumn afternoon. Throughout the imagery, organic shapes and references to the natural world compete with a sense of laser-cut, machine-made perfection.
