New Designers Part II award winners announced

Graduate exhibition New Designers has announced the award winners for the second part of its 2015 show.

New Designers Part II showcases design work from this year’s graduates in the visual communications, illustration, furniture, product, industry, graphic, motion arts and theatre design fields.

The winners

There were 12 awards given this year, ranging from cash prizes to internships, free training courses and legal and financial advice.

This year’s top prize – The New Designer of the Year award – went to Jack Lennie from Edinburgh Napier University for his motorcycle design made from scrap bicycle pieces, “Tinker”.

The judges say Lennie’s project was an “unpredictable approach to sustainability”. “Having found that 90% of bikes were written off due to frame damage, he found a clever, innovative way to bring scrap back to life,” they say.

Lennie has received a £1,500 cash prize, plus £1,000 of legal advice, £2,020 worth of accounting and taxation advice and a half-day of training on PR and marketing from Four Colman Getty.

The New Designer of the Year runner up prize went to Stephanie Kiewel from the University of Cumbria for “Funkenflug” – a film which pulled together 200 locals from her native Germany to tell a story from history.

“Stephanie’s film was stunning,” say the judges. “She has an astute eye and achieved high production values and portrayed an engaging story, despite a minimal budget.” Kiewel takes away a £500 cash prize.

Other winners include Juwon Seo’s desk design “Work Nest”, Ryan Panchal’s digital campaign “teacHER” to unite women in education across the globe through illustration, and James Benson’s floatation device made from recycled plastic bottles “BottleBuoy”.
