New posters created for Joy Division biopic Control re-screening
Four limited-edition posters have been designed ahead of a special re-showing of Anton Corbijn’s Joy Division biopic Control.
Architectural photographer Jim Stephenson, who runs the monthly photography talk MiniClick, has put together next month’s event around a screening of Control at the Duke of Yorks Cinema, as part of Brighton Fringe festival.
Stephenson asked creative director of Harrison and Co Chris Harrison, founder of Very Own Studio Mark Ferguson, and illustrators Billy Mather and Ryan Gillett to each design a poster for the film.
‘I reminded them to watch it [Control] again, and to make a poster of the film, not of Joy Division,’ says Stephenson, who initially asked the artists to work in two colours, as he was considering having the posters screen printed – a route which was later abandoned.
Each artist edited down several ideas to come up with their final design, according to Stephenson, who says the posters will be used to advertise the screening and be sold.
Harrison’s poster has been inspired by the account of Deborah Curtis – wife of late Joy Division singer Ian Curtis – in her biography Touching From A Distance, in which she recalls how Ian Curtis brought home a bunch of freesias the night before he ended his life.
Harrison says, ‘According to Deborah, this was a first, he had never brought home flowers before. The image stood out for me. An image of a man obsessed with death. A man who had already written his suicide note through his music. I wanted to incorporate the freesias, almost as a final act to the story. Or if you chose to see it differently, a burial shroud. Darkness and beauty.’
A Q&A panel is being put together to follow the screening, which will include Steven Mallinder, lead singer of Cabaret Voltaire – post punk contemporaries of Joy Division.
The posters are approximately A3 size and are printed on 350gsm recycled paper. Only 30 copies have been produced of each design and a set of four can be bought for £20 by emailing jim@clickclickjim.com
