The Euro took a step closer to becoming reality last week, with the unveiling of the single currency's seven banknotes and eight coins, designed by competition winners from European banks. The currency will be introduced to the EU's member states on 1 January 2002. The front of the banknotes feature windows and gateways, symbolising 'the European spirit of openness and co-operation' as well as buildings from important architectural periods in Europe's history, which were designed by Robert Kalina of Austria's national bank. The coins were designed by Luc Luycx of Royal Belgian Mint.
