Jean Nouvel to design Serpentine Gallery Pavilion

Nouvel’s pavilion will contrast lightweight materials with industrial structures and will use a red palette to reflect London’s telephone boxes, post boxes and buses. The space will house a café and the Serpentine Gallery’s programme of summer events.

The appointment is part of an annual scheme run by the Serpentine Gallery which invites an internationally acclaimed architect who has not previously completed a building in England to design the temporary structure. The pavilion will remain on the gallery’s lawn until October.

Nouvel has designed more than 200 buildings worldwide, including the Copenhagen Concert Hall, the Ferrari factory and the Musée du quai Branly in Paris.
