New museum opens at yacht race HQ
Mather & Co has designed a visitor attraction and museum at the Spanish headquarters of yachting event The Volvo Ocean Race.
The development opens today at the race organiser’s base in Alicante, where Mather & Co has already designed the ‘nerve centre’ operations room and offices.
From here races are managed, and satellite navigation and other communications coordinated.
The Museum will comprise an exhibition tracing the history of the event, including environmental challenges and technical developments, as well as focusing on the ‘human element’ of the race, according to Mather & Co.
To this end, an immersive environment has been created using projections to re-create conditions on deck and capture a sense of homecoming after nine months at sea and a race which covers 39 000 nautical miles of some of the worlds most treacherous oceans.
Dan Procter, Mather & Co’s lead designer on the project says, ‘The Volvo Ocean Race is one of the most demanding team sporting events in the world and will be the focus of sailing enthusiasts worldwide, global media interest and major corporate hospitality events.
‘Our work on the headquarters building, and particularly the new visitor attraction element, will provide a truly international showcase for Mather & Co’s design expertise.’
