Recognition Award winners

Cog Design has named Daniel Duhig, an undergraduate at the University of Leeds, as the winner of its first Recognition Awards scheme.

To enter the award, design students in the UK were asked to design postcards that would help spread awareness of the organising panel’s Recognition Day initiative on 4 May, when it wants ‘everyone to take a few minutes out of their day to tell others that they appreciate them’.

Duhig scooped the top prize for his postcard, which was left mainly blank for the sender’s own message because, ‘recognition is personal, and what’s more personal than a hand-written card rather than something that someone else has designed or prescribed?’, he says.

The panel, drawn from across the design industry, includes Cog Design managing director Michael Smith and NB Studio’s creative director Nick Finney. They picked Duhig as overall winner and he will receive a cash prize of £1000.

Lauren Algeo from the University of Greenwich and Kathryn Cook from Kingston University were chosen as runners up and each will receive £500.

Algeo’s design illustrated the various physical ways a person can show appreciation, like a pat on the back or a beaming smile, and Cook created a series of cards recognising the contributions of animals.
