Top designers create Liverpool 08 pavilions

The first in a series of community arts pavilions by international designers launches in Liverpool’s Kirkdale area on 27 April, as part of the city’s European Capital of Culture 2008 celebrations.

Edinburgh landscape architect Max Gross is working with education centre Rotunda in Kirkdale to build a pavilion featuring a vertical garden. A derelict strip of land will become a garden that local people will be invited to tend.

A second pavilion, titled Nexus, is due to open next month on the approach to Liverpool’s disused Edge Hill train station.

Local arts organisation Metal appointed Colombian designers Luis Fernando Pelàez and Juan Manuel Pelàez to create the Nexus pavilion. It will reference the design of original 1836 flooring found in the station.

Artist Michael Trainor is working with Garston Cultural Village to transform a disused Edwardian school into the headquarters of a ‘mini independent state’ called The Artistic Republic Of Garston. The space will host a launch ‘revolution’ on 31 May.
