Turner Duckworth bags Grammy for Metallica album
Turner Duckworth has won a Grammy for its work on Metallica’s most recent album, Death Magnetic.
The
‘We are absolutely delighted because it’s such an unusual win for us. We hadn’t entered ourselves – it was the record company – and it was a real pet project that we had designers in both studios [London and San Francisco] working on,’ says a spokeswoman for Turner Duckworth.
The team, led by art directors Bruce Duckworth, Sarah Moffat and David Turner, reworked the iconic Metallica logo, as well as creating promotional materials including a coffin-shaped special edition and a vinyl boxed set.
Turner Duckworth saw off competition from: Don Clark’s design for Hawk Nelson… Is My Friend; Nouns by Brian Roettinger for No Age on Sub Pop; Radio Retaliation by Neal Ashby, Matthew Curry and Patrick Donohue for Thievery Corporation on ESL Music; and Summer Rains by art directors Amanda Barrett, Abby DeWald, Renee Jablow and Rick Whitmore for The Ditty Bops on The Green Witch Society.
Radiohead’s In Rainbows, designed by art directors Stanley Donwood, Mel Maxwell & Christiaan Munro for TBD Records, took home a Grammy for Best Boxed Or Special Limited Edition Package.

It's worth noting the clever concept - the pattern around the grave is derived from the pattern iron filings make around a magnet.
