Nolympic Games

It’s one year to the day until the Olympics, and the London Olympic Organizing Committee of The Olympic and Paralympics Games is  busying itself with what some might see as polemic.

rings of disappointment

Count-down stunts are in place: Tom Daley has made the first dive into the Olympic pool and ‘1 Year to Go’ is flashing on the BT Tower.

One studio isn’t so enthused though, and its designers have taken it upon themselves to represent the disenfranchised ticketless armchair Olympians.

no ticket

Jesse Boyce, director at design and branding consultancy Lethal has come up with five Nolympics designs to represent what he calls the ‘mass disenchantment’ felt toward the Olympics.

A lighthearted antithesis rather then any real ill will, these designs have gone up on Lethal’s site, where visitors are encouraged to vote on their favourite.

‘We might look at making them into postcards, or doing something larger scale with the favourite,’ says Boyce.

Though massively disappointed at missing out on tickets myself i dont think ill be throwing my toys out the pram like Boyce. Such negativity seems out of place here when the spectacle of the London olympics has so many positives. Sure certain aspects such as ticketing need to be addressed but terrible illustrations with all the persuasiveness of a mopey teenager are not helping anybody.

Did anyone else see or hear it on the news last night? …desperately seeking cut through from this self-conscious, earnest industry that is London 2012 and here he is, our Olympic mascot, barmy Boris. I didn’t think I’d be parading him as an example of brave and joyous energy but, well, there we go. Let the good surprises happen…

There happens to be a Team GB ‘Olympic hopeful’ across the room from me right now, I guess that’s one person who will be looking forward to it…

But be careful when using the London Olympics’ IP, even ‘London 2012’ is registered to them (which falls into the ‘silly use of IP’ bracket if you ask me). See below.
