Number of art and design students grows by a quarter - report shows

The number of UK creative art and design students has grown by nearly a quarter since 2003/04, according to a new report.

The report, by university representative organisation Universities UK, shows that the number of creative art and design students in 2009/10 stood at 173 825, up from 139 130 in 2003/04.

The report says the growth in the number of creative art and design students has ‘increased at a rate above that seen for all students’.

The proportion of creative art and design students in the total student population now stands at 7 per cent, up from 6.3 per cent in 2003/04.

Creative art and design is one of a number of subject areas that have become more popular over this period, with just computer science, history and philosophy and combined subjects becoming less popular.

A recent report from the Higher Education Statistics agency showed that more than a third of art and design graduates are still without a full-time job more than three years after graduation.
