Pop-up Typography Emporium
Much as many of us would love to bury our heads in the ever-ebbing sands of time being counted down to Christmas, it may be time to face facts: the Johns Lewis ads are out, the lights are up, the panic is setting in. As Coca-Cola so brightly points out, the holidays are coming.
However, preparing for Christmas need not be all panic and despair at the ever-decreasing number of shopping days left. One such beacon that restores faith in the festivities is the Pop-up Typography Emporium, setting up shop in north London during the first weekend of December.
The project is the handiwork of typography aficionado Sarah Hyndman, creative director of consultancy With Relish, who has previously worked on type-fests including the Jubilee Typography Challenge, as well as the supercute Dog Bingo series.
The pop-up will be showing and selling all things typographically Christmassy, including, alphabet Christmas decorations, typographic greetings cards, screen-printed type posters and object alphabets.
Hyndman found inspiration in ‘glow-in-the-dark ink which can be used to reveal secret messages’ to create some rather lovely Glow-in-the-dark Christmas Cards.
Other influences include light bulbs of old casino signs in the Neon Boneyard, Las Vegas, while much of the work plays with the idea of using type to create images.
The Twelve Days of Christmas image exemplifies this perfectly – showing icons such as the partridge in a pear tree formed of cleverly arranged letters and symbols. Turns out all you need to do to create a very convincing representation of two lords a leaping are some cleverly and positioned ‘<’ signs.
Elsewhere, imaginatively-scaled asterisks form a lovely array of snowflakes and a big red full stop makes a perfect Rudolf’s nose.
