Remaking the roundel
One hundred artists have come up with some interesting, unique and occasionally off-the-wall reinterpretations of the iconic London Underground logo for a new Art on the Underground book.
The Roundel: 100 Artists Remake a London Icon, features the logo reproduced in graphics, photography, an umbrella and even a child’s face…
Jeremy Deller, Sir Peter Blake, Yinka Shonibare and Richard Wentworth are among those who have contributed to the book, which has been designed by Fraser Muggeridge Studio.
The ‘bar and circle’ as the roundel was originally known, was developed by transport manager Frank Pick and calligrapher Edward Johnson in 1908. It was introduced to highlight station names on platform walls plastered with commercial advertising posters.
Since then it has been adapted for countless posters and art projects.
In 2008, to mark the roundel’s centenary, Art on the Underground commissioned the 100 artistic interpretations gathered in this book, approaching a range of different artists, from recent graduates to international stars.
The works are now being held in Art on the Underground’s permanent collection, and are featured in this new book.
The Roundel: 100 Artists Remake a London Icon, is published by Art/Books on 22 October, priced at £12.95.
