Rising Stars

Passion, vision and ambition are compulsory to make it to the top in design, and 2010’s outstanding crop of Rising Stars are in emphatic possession of all three.

This year, we have sought the broadest collection of design stars by asking a tutor, an eminent practitioner and an industry representative to nominate in each discipline.

The result is an inspiring mix of new talent from fields as diverse as cutting-edge interaction media to traditional furniture design. Over the past few years, graphic design university courses have churned out an ever-broader array of practitioners, some of whom are creating Pop Art-inspired politico-cultural illustrations, while others look beyond the purely visual to brand blue chip companies.

Unhappily, this year there is only one woman among our 14 Rising Stars. The nominators put this down to the great number of women who leave design early on in their careers, proving yet again that the industry has a long way to go to accommodate women’s professional requirements and to keep valuable talent feeding the beating heart of design.
