Sainsbury’s in-store shopping app means customers can avoid tills

Shoppers can use the app to pre-select groceries, to locate them when they arrive at a store and then pay via their mobile.

Sainsbury’s has created a shopping app that customers will use to find and buy items in-store without queuing at the tills.

The design has been led by Sainsbury’s newly created in-house Digital Team, which is being built by Sainsbury’s head of digital experience Charlotte Briscall.

An external consultancy has also been engaged but Sainsbury’s was unable to name it.

Shoppers will use the app before they arrive at a store to create a virtual basket or shopping list. Once they arrive the app helps them locate the items they need.

Items are scanned at the shelf as they are found and payment is made using the same app so shoppers can walk straight out of the store.

The app is being trialled with customers in with the view to rolling it out to Nectar Card holders next year.

Sainsbury’s says its growing digital team is currently attracting “the best digital minds”.

Sainsbury’s digital and technology director John Rudoe says: “We’re putting digital firmly at the forefront of our agenda, and putting technology in the hands of our customers.”

The app is a response to customer’s desire to combine the convenience of online shopping and the personal and tactile advantages of shopping in store.

Rudoe says: “We know that customers’ weekly shop doesn’t start at our front door – they know what they like and they also like that search for a bargain.

“They still want to come into store – but with limited time, they want to be able to get their shop done quickly.
