Science Museum plans to take robots on tour

The museum is seeking designer to work on a touring exhibition showing the past, present and future of robots.

Factory of future

The Science Museum is planning a major touring exhibition looking at robots and is seeking a design team to work on the project.

The museum says its proposed exhibition will examine the past, present and future of robots and will “bring together a unique collection, from miraculous mechanical monks of the 16th century to the latest humanoids hot out of the lab”.

The Science Museum is seeking a design team to work on the project, which will include 3D design, graphics, lighting and audio-visual work.

For the exhibition, the museum says it is looking for design that will be “theatrical, contemporary and architectural”, adding: “We want our visitors to feel they have travelled through time and place”.

The exhibition will be split into five main sections: Marvel, Obey, Dream, Recreate and Imagine.

These sections will trace the development of robots from the 15th century up to the present day and will look at what they could become in the future.

The exhibition will feature more than 100 objects – ranging from a 2.4m humanoid to a 25mm mechanical spider – and the museum says it wants the show to be “a story told through objects”.

A number of these will be working items, which the museum says will “speak directly to visitors’ desires for encounters with actual robots”.

The museum has issued a notice for the exhibition design project, which can be found here.

The deadline for receipt of tenders or requests to participate is 1 September.
