Someone’s Olympics pictograms unveiled

Pictograms for the London 2012 Olympic Games launched today, designed by Someone.

The graphics, which depict every Olympic sport, will be shown in two different formats, including a silhouette version and a ‘dynamic version that was inspired by the connectivity of the London Underground map’, according to a statement from the London Organising Committee of the Olympic Games and Paralympic Games.

The pictograms will be used on signage, wayfinding, posters and merchandise.

‘By unveiling [the pictograms] now we have an opportunity to use them as a tool for people to find out more about what is on offer at London 2012,’ says London 2012 chairman Sebastian Coe. ‘I hope the pictograms will be the gateway to achieve this.’

London Mayor Boris Johnson calls the pictograms ‘bold and dynamic images which capture the energy and colour of the games’, and praises their ‘graphic simplicity’.

They will be featured on limited-edition Adidas T-shirts set to go on sale next week to celebrate 1000 days until the games begin.

A full set of Paralympic pictograms, also by Someone, will be launched later this year.

Olympic Games pictograms were first used at the 1948 games in London.

How the mighty have fallen. London used to show the world what great communications design was all about. This is trash that any untrained person could have come up with.

I’m sorry – but they are terrible.

Horrible, ugly little tings that display a mean spirit, lack of technique and devoid of any joy, life of beauty. The Tube map concept is terrible – and sounds like something they made up afterward to explain away a total lack of inspiration.

They seem to have been designed by a panel of people who loathe the Olympics, and possibly the rest of us. I feel ashamed of them.
