Sustainable furniture designer Parnell announces new show

‘I create a demand from unwanted supply’ says Nic Parnell, a sustainable furniture designer whose only concession to the scruples of upcycling is using new nylon flock and lacquer.

Parnell will be exhibiting from tomorrow at the Pitfield shop, in East London, which has given over its display space to the designer for six weeks after seeing his furniture at the Interiors UK trade show in Birmingham.

Sustainability for Parnell is ‘a process of resourcefulness’ not a ‘moral responsibility,’ he says.

His latest collection ‘Outside In’ aspires to bridge the gap between the surreal and the ordinary ‘by reinjecting nature with  a contemporary mask,’ he says.

According to Parnell, ‘The perception of value with regards to wood has always been subjected to its properties of grain character and strength, which are the signs that so often determine the value of furniture and crafted goods. However, if the surface of wood is covered in a new material such as nylon flock, these defining properties become irrelevant.’

His new Cleavage range will be on display, exploring the process of splitting wood – cleaving – which allows the production of long lengths of wood without the use of machinery.

Pitfield presents Nic Parnell runs from Friday 22 March until the end of April at Pitfield House, 31-35 Pitfield Street, London, N1
