The most beautiful information
The winners have been announced in the inaugural Information is Beautiful Awards, which aim to highlight top-notch infographic design.
Taking the Ultimate Award, for the best project in the competition, is CNN Home & Away, by Stamen.
The graphic, which depicts a map of Afghanistan showing sites of US casualties, next to a map of the US showing the soldiers’ hometowns, saw off competition from more than 1000 entries to the competition.
Gold, silver and bronze winners were announced across six categories, including data visualisation, infographic/infodesign and tool or website.
The awards were launched last year by data visualisation guru David McCandless and WPP consumer insight consultancy Kantar.
McCandless says, ‘Data visualisation is a rising trend across many domains – web, science, media, politics – and it’s a really artful, really tricky fusion of analysis, design and storytelling.
‘But we’ve been blown away by the standard and variety of the entries. Whittling the shortlist down has been no easy task. I’ve had infographic dreams for weeks.’
