Trafalgar Square to host ‘sound portal’ for London Design Festival

A ‘sound portal’, featuring the work of sound designers, is to be installed in Trafalgar Square as part of this year’s London Design Festival.

The sound-proof structure is being developed by engineer Arup in collaboration with art organization Sound and Music and ‘creative think-tank’ Be Open.

Artists working in the space will include Jana Winderen and Ivan Pavlov.

Arup director Andrew Hall says visitors to the installation will be ‘completely immersed in sound and music’.  Arup describes the installation as being designed like ‘an alien black rubberized structure’.

Other new projects and installations unveiled for this year’s LDF include the one-day Global Design Forum, and works in the V&A by Keiichi Matsuda, Nendo and Rolf Sachs.

This year’s London Design Festival runs from 14-23 September.
