Unit Editions’ Herb Lubalin monograph
The ever-reliable Unit Editions, run by Adrian Shaughnessy and Spin’s Tony Brook, is back with what it says is its most ambitious project yet…
It’s a limited-edition, numbered, deluxe monograph of US designer Herb Lubalin – and you’ll want to get your hands on it.
Authored by Shaughnessy and designed by Spin, the book features hundreds of examples of Lubalin’s work, including his designs for Fact and Avant Garde magazines, some never before published.
It also features interviews with Lubalin contemporaries including George Lois and Seymour Chwast, as well as images of the designer ‘at work and play’.
This includes the above shot of Lubalin, Chwast, Lou Dorfsman et al in the steamroom at Grossingers’s resort in the Catskills in which, we are informed, ‘Herb’s towel has been photographically extended’.
Unit Editions says, ‘The only previous monograph on Lubalin was published in 1985. Long out of print, it can be found online for up to $400.’
Herb Lubalin: American Graphic Designer 1918-81, is published by Unit Editions next month, priced at £65. (You can pre-order now for £55.)
