UVA and Amenity Space light up Opera North

United Visual Artists and Amenity Space have created installations for the newly expanded home of Opera North in Leeds.

Launching today, UVA’s month-long installation at the Howard Assembly Rooms features a series of illuminated pendulums that swing along to a soundtrack by musician Mira Calix.

London-based architecture and design group Amenity Space has created a second, permanent installation. Trace will track the movement of pedestrians on the new 30m-long bridge linking Opera North’s Grand Theatre to the Howard Assembly Rooms. Data from walkers will be translated into pulses of coloured light visible to passers-by beneath the bridge.

The Culture Company commissioned UVA and Amenity Space six months ago to create artworks for the newly refurbished, Victorian-era Howard Assembly Rooms, which opened in January as an arts centre.
