New Designers preview
Annual graduate showcase New Designers is set to launch its 2012 showcase, with week one focusing on applied art and week two on graphics.
The show, at London’s Business Design Centre, features the best of this year’s graduates, while attendant event One Year On features 50 designers who have established their own businesses in the past year.
Here are some of the graduates we’ll be looking out for.
These lovely Emerge vessels are by Elaine Bolt of UCA Farnham, who will be exhibiting in week one.
Also showing in week one will be Emily Ruffle, of the University of Hertfordshire, with these Baroque Bowls.
Week two, meanwhile, will focus on graphics work – such as this Travel Reinterpretations project by Lucy Dodds from Havering College.
This year’s One Year On show will be curated by Jethro Macey. Exhibitors will include Dawn Gardner, who will be presenting graphics work.
Tatsuya Akita will be showing this range of rather flash desk accessories.
And there’s plenty of jewellery, including this lovely mosaic brooch by Mariko Sumioka.
Other New Designers events include a stitching masterclass from organisation Fine Cell Work, which works with prison inmates to develop needlepoint and embroidery pieces, and Monorex’s Secret Walls Pro event, which will see Debut Arts taking on graduate designers in a live art ‘battle’.
Design Week readers can book New Designers tickets in advance for just £8.50 (tickets cost £14 on the door) by visiting www.newdesigners.com or phoning 08448 480140 and quoting the reference ND270. This offer is available until 27 June.
New Designers Part 1 runs from 27-30 June, and Part 2 from 4-7 July, at the Business Design Centre, London N1.
