Ready-made curtains from the Bouroullec Brothers

If, like me, you’re something of a DIY dunce, then you’ll probably see the appeal in the new Ready Made Curtain, developed by Ronan and Erwan Bouroullec for Kvadrat.

Unveiled at IMM Cologne this month, the design is based around a hanging cord with a winding mechanism. This replaces the traditional curtain pole and allows the system to fit any window.

Also in the kit – which is Kvadrat’s first consumer project – are wall fixings, pegs, and a selection of Kvadrat fabrics.

Kvadrat worked with innovation consultancy ReD Associates to investigate curtain issues before approaching the Bouroullec brothers and asking them to develop the design.

The Bouroullecs say, ‘We wanted to escape a hi-tech solution, but we didn’t want to make something rustic or heavy either. We reflected on the popular method of fixing a poster to the wall, just simply with a staple.’

The brothers add, ‘The starting point was a picture in a Japanese book from the 1950s. The book was a catalogue of objects and in it was a guitar. From there, we began to explore the system of string tension in guitars.

‘The cord is an effective and elegant solution to hanging a curtain. It can be rewound when need be, in order to maintain the right tension and is easily transferable from window to window.’
