Alt/Shift conference tackles design education

The past couple of years have seen some pretty major upheavals in design education - namely threats to cut Art & Design from the National Curriculum in schools and HEFCE (Higher Education Funding Council for England, a non-departmental body of the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills) has removed the funding of the subject in higher education.

This December, the Alt/Shift conference will explore how design impacts our society and economy, and how best to reflect and nurture this through design education.
The conference is organised by the University of the Arts London and ad agency LBi. It aims to address issues such as how to connect with emerging creative methodology, how accountable designers need to be to the industries they serve and the wider responsibility of design.

Among the speakers are Shane Walter, founder of OneDotZero; Matt Wade, Kin Design partner; Russell Holmes, partner at ICO Design; It’s Nice That founder Will Hudson and Nat Hunter, co-director of design at the RSA.
Nat Hunter
Focus areas include professional practice within the creative industries, enterprise and employability skills, education for sustainable practice, contemporary careers guidance and networking.
Organisers say, ‘It is hoped that the event will the open the doors to a frank and honest exchange of views between education and key players within the creative industries, and help us create an educational environment that encourages engagement with the ideas and principles that are shaping the contemporary world in order to influence its future development.’
