D&AD President's Lectures to return
A new President’s Lecture season has been announced by D&AD and with Neville Brody at the helm, the focus, as per his manifesto, is on education.
Three events are billed, and the last A Future for Creative Education? asks ‘Does creative education need more government support? Or should it be directed to other more desperate sectors?’
Lord David Puttnam who will be giving the lecture’s keynote, left everyone with something to think about at the D&AD White Pencil symposium last year when he said, ‘If we are to succeed as a country and a society… we need a brilliantly educated, and brilliantly informed, generation of young people.’
The may event will be based around the argument that creative education is coming under a sustained attack from the government, despite the creative industry making a marked and significant contribution to the UK economy.
Debate is rife at the moment over Education Secretary Michael Gove’s decision not to include design and creative subjects in the English Baccalaureate curriculum.
Design Week and a huge consortium of industry backers continue to keep the pressure on.
Meanwhile D&AD event the Digital Revolution Revisited will take place in March. When a similar event was held last year it asked, ‘Has it hit? If not, when will it? And what will change when it does?’
Now, in the knowledge that there will be a technological revolution, it asks will there also be a behavioural, economic, neurological or evolutionary one?
Brody will be joined by vice president of D&AD Laura Jordan Bambach, who is also executive creative director at Dare, and Tom Roope, founder and director of the Rumpus Room.
The first session kicks off next month when John Warwicker will take an audience through his ‘growing old alive’ philosophy.
Tomato co-founder Warwicker will lead the audience on a journey through the ‘typographic and climatic’ landscape for his session.
The President’s Lectures series take place between February and May in London and Manchester. For more information go to: http://www.dandad.org/dandad/events?series=President%E2%80%99s%20Lectures
