Interwoven at Habitat

The Platform gallery space at Habitat’s King’s Road store, west London, will showcase a diverse selection of work that explore new technologies used in weaving designs.

At the heart of the exhibition is around 40 pieces designed by Philippa Thorne, who produces woven vessels and baskets from her base in Swaziland, merging African making methods with contemporary design.

Thorne’s company, Gone Rural, was set up to create employment for rural women in Africa, and provides income to over 700 women, supplying grass and textile products to more than a thousand retail outlets in thirty countries.

Also featured in the exhibition is work by Jane Harper, whose pieces in woven metal take inspiration from the industrial landscapes of her home town of Manchester.

Elsewhere are pieces by Coralie Bonnet, who previously designed accessories for Alexander McQueen and will be presenting a series of large-scale wool and ceramic panels. All the designers in the showcase are alumni of Central St Martins College of Art and Design.

Platform at Habitat is a design initiative open to the public during store hours and provides a space for discussions, talks and events.
