Whatever next for typography?

How would you summarise the role of typography in your work?

Tricky as it sounds, this is exactly what a group of typographically-focussed designers and artists had to do in a series of ‘in-conversation’ events back in June last year.

Centred around the title Future Type Map, conversationalists were asked to describe the role typography has played in their work in the past, in the present and how they feel it will in future.

The resulting descriptions were then transcribed to form the text of a new book published by Camberwell Press called Whatever Next: a discourse on typography.

The responses, compiled and edited by David Coventon, James Edgar and Frederick Williams, will now be displayed at London’s Kemistry Gallery alongside the participants’ visual response to the Future Type Map theme.

The exhibition has been curated by This is Art, and will display stand-out-quotes with the imagery, encouraging visitors to give some thought to the role of typography in their own lives and work, and also cast their minds to how it might impact on it in future.
