Alexander McQueen show among Brit Insurance winners

Alexander McQueen’s Spring/Summer 2010 catwalk presentation and Min-Kyu Choi’s folding plug are among the category winners in the 2010 Brit Insurance Design Awards – with the overall winner due to be unveiled on 16 March.

McQueen’s presentation Plato’s Atlantis won in the fashion category, while Choi’s folding plug picked up the prize for best product.

The architecture award went to Chilean practice Elemental’s Monterrey Housing in Mexico, while the furniture award was won by Dutch designer Jair Straschnow’s Grassworks.

The Newspaper Club, by Ben Terrett, Russell Davies and Tom Taylor, scooped the graphics award; the Eye Writer, by members of Free Art and Technology, Open Frameworks, Graffiti Research La, the Ebeling Group and Tony Quan, won the interactive award, and the E430 Electric Aircraft by Yuneec International won the transport award.

Referring to the selection of McQueen, who died in February, judge Paula Reed, style director of Grazia, says, ‘The video presentation of McQueen’s last show is one of the most compelling pieces in the exhibition. The impressiveness simply compounds the enormity of his loss.’

Chairman of the judges Antony Gormley says, ‘The seven winners provide a snapshot of some of the most outstanding designs from the past 12 months and reflect the important role design plays in improving people’s lives.’
