Angry Birds, Boris bikes and iPad vie for Brit Insurance prize

The Apple iPad, the Angry Birds game and the Barclays Cycle Hire scheme in London are all on the shortlist for the 2011 Brit Insurance Design Awards.

A total of 89 projects have been shortlisted across the categories of architecture, fashion, furniture, graphics, interactive, product and transport.

The architecture category features Heatherwick Studio’s UK Pavilion for the Shanghai Expo and MVRDV and Mole Architects’ Balancing Barn project in Suffolk.

The fashion category features The Margaret Howell Plus Shirt, designed by Howell with Kenneth Grange, and the Uniqlo + J Autumn/Winter collection.

Furniture boasts Heatherwick Studio’s Spun chair and Martino Gamper’s Vigna Chair, while graphics features the Unit Editions publishing project, from Tony Brook and Adrian Shaughnessy, and an edition of The Life and Opinions of Tristram Shandy, designed by A Practice for Everyday Life.

Alongside Rovio’s Angry Birds game in the interactive category are the Wired magazine app and the Wallpaper custom covers project, developed by Kin. In the product category, alongside Apple’s iPad, are the Dyson Air Multiplier Fan and Ben De Lisi’s Universal Hospital Gown, created as part of the Design Council’s Design for Patient Dignity scheme.

The transport category boasts Serco and Transport for London’s Barclays Cycle Hire scheme and the Fiat 500 Twinair.

The nominated designs will be on show at the Design Museum from 16 February-7 August and category winners will be announced on 28 February. The overall Brit Insurance Design of the Year will be announced on 15 March.
