Are infographics useful, or mere decoration?

I’m a huge fan of The Guardian’s infographics (Facts in focus, DW 8 July), and have kept a number of the paper’s recent Factfile series.

However, I do think the main example used in Scott Billings’ feature (showing Government public spending by department, pictured), follows a growing trend to display information graphically slightly for the sake of it – to make it more visually interesting than a more useable solution would be.

Infographics can become more like art than design. That said, I’ll still study them with interest.
