Assemble briefs students on Design Ventura challenge

This year’s brief was set by Turner Prize-winning collective Assemble, and asks teens to think about the long-term impact of their designs

The Design Museum has launched its 2019 Design Ventura competition, this year asking students to create a product that will sustainably “improve everyday life”.

The brief for this year’s event was set by award-winning design collective Assemble. It challenges entrants to solve a social, educational or environmental issue faced by either adult design enthusiasts, young people or families.

Following the trend seen throughout the industry, sustainability is the top priority this time around. “[Students] need to consider how designs can be ethically made and be as environmentally friendly as possible,” says Assemble co-founder and partner Paloma Strelitz.

Sustainability and accessibility have been major threads through all Assemble’s work since being founded in 2010. The group’s Granby Winter Garden project, which looked to reclaim two ex-council houses for local residents to use and enjoy, won the Turner Prize, making it the first architecture or design studio to win the award.

Winners of this year’s Design Ventura competition will be given the opportunity to develop their idea and put it into production. From there, the designs will be sold in the Design Museum’s shop. Previous winners include an interactive game of the card game snap, and an expandable plant pot.
