Bentley Holland designs Copenhagen climate change book

Bentley Holland and Partners has created a book for the Department for Children, Schools and Families, presenting the environmental views of children to delegates at the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change in Copenhagen.

A rostered consultancy, the group was appointed in November and given copy collected by the DCSF, which it was asked to make into a palatable form, initially for presentation to Children’s Secretary Ed Balls and Climate Change Secretary Ed Miliband, before duplicates were sent to Prime Minister Gordon Brown and the Prince of Wales.

Dave Woodrow, creative director at BHP, says, ‘First the DCSF suggested a poster, but we went for a book, which can’t be ignored or filed away.’ Five copies of this oversized A3 book were handmade before 1000 copies of a second version were designed for British delegates at the conference.

The book, Children’s Statement on Climate Change, was designed to ensure that children are heard ‘in a clear, succinct and understandable manner’, the consultancy says.

Illustration was commissioned to Russ Willms, who was asked to create something that would appeal ‘to adults and children equally’, says Woodrow. Strategic advice on delivery and segmentation of information was carried out by the consultancy and both books were turned around from brief to print in ten days.
