Bums on beach

We’re told it’s not a great idea to try to reinvent the wheel. It’s more about how creatively you use the original. This is what one or two fans of Glug – Studio Output’s regular London networking evenings – are planning on Friday 9 July, when they cycle down to Brighton for the event’s second coming there.

Of course, this isn’t an official bike run, just a few mates out on a jaunt, and most London ‘gluggers’ will be travelling by train. The main event at Glug Brighton – a collaboration with local activists Crushed and Studio Rush – is, inevitably, a beach party with a difference at the Coaltition bar, featuring live art, DJs, graffitti and a pop-up shop, among other attractions. Talks, we’re told, will be provided by the likes of Airside and Studio Conran.

Carl Rush of local consultancy Crushed says he was ‘blown away’ by the popularity of the first Brighton event last November. With nearly 700 members now signed up he’s expecting even greater things for this latest collaborative event, shunning attempts at reinvention.

‘We’ve been running Glug London events for over a year now and these continue to grow from strength to strength. When Carl at Crushed approached us to set one up in Brighton we were more than happy to let them do this,’ says Studio Output’s Ian Hambleton.‘Every event they’ve run so far has sold out in days, so it seemed to make sense to run a joint party this summer to get everyone together. Hopefully, we can soak up some sunshine and the wonderful Brighton beach atmosphere.’

Let’s hope that revellers are cultured enough though not to take the beach theme too literally. Remember Pet Rocks weren’t that great the first time round if tempted to introduce that graffitti artist to the Brighton pebbles.
