Casson Mann’s Making Modern Science gallery scrapped by Science Museum

However, a spokeswoman for the museum says Universal Design Studio’s plans for the Making Modern Communications Gallery will go ahead.

The two consultancies were appointed alongside each other in April to work on the two ‘Treasury’ galleries as part of the Science Museum’s Museum of the Future masterplan.

The spokeswoman says that while the Making Modern Science concept is ‘central’ to the museum, it was difficult to pull different strands from around the museum into one gallery.

Following reports that the Science Museum has scrapped the Museum of the Future project, developed by architect Wilkinson Eyre, she describes the proposals as a ‘visualisation’ for the museum’s future and says the museum is currently ‘adding detail to this visualisation’.

The Museum of the Future plan was unveiled in 2009 and aimed for completion in 2014. Proposals included opening up the museum’s façade at ground level and introducing a new rooftop gallery.

Recent senior changes at the Science Museum have seen Ian Blatchford, previously deputy director of the Victoria & Albert Museum, replace Chris Rapley as director of the Science Museum. Karen Livingstone, the Science Museum’s new director of masterplan and estate, has also joined from the V&A.

The Science Museum was rebranded by Johnson Banks last year.
