D Studio brews up Anglo-German look for new beer range

D Studio has created packaging for a new range of German ales for Kent-based Westerham Brewery. The consultancy began working on the project six weeks ago and was appointed because of its long-standing relationship with the brewery.

The new range is a collaboration between Westerham owner Robert Wicks and German brewer Markus Lotz, so D Studio developed comic names on the theme ’German beer, Kent accent’. The consultancy has also created bold pump and bottle graphics based on the Anglo-Germanic split.

D Studio creative partner Wes Anson says,’The project’s not for a huge global brewer so the packaging really has to sell it becomes posters in its own right.’

The upper part of the graphics features hand-drawn type inspired by traditional German fonts and an eagle, whereas the bottom part depicts an English rose, with a classic twist on Gill Sans. Anson says, ’There’s a traditional English drop-shadow, like old sign-writing.’
