Davies Leslie-Smith develops ‘Sex and the City’ effect for snacks start-up The Big Yum

Buckinghamshire-based consultancy Davies Leslie-Smith has designed the branding, packaging and a website for snack food company The Big Yum.

The Big Yum appointed Davies Leslie-Smith in autumn last year after the consultancy was recommended by copywriting and public relations company Purple Pilchard. Davies Leslie-Smith presented ten concepts, convincing the start-up’s owners, Aaron and Pippa Witcher, to abandon plans to run a competitive design pitch.

’We thought it would be great to appoint a nearby consultancy that has the same creativity and quality as a big London consultancy, but on a more local scale,’ says Pippa Witcher.

The first product, chocolate-covered salted pretzels, launches in Harvey Nichols department stores this week. The Big Yum hopes to roll them out to other independent retailers in a month. Two further products – chocolate marshmallows, and chocolate and caramel popcorn – are scheduled to launch by the end of the year.

Witcher says that the brief involved ’creating a standout, quirky, fun, different look’ for the products, which are packaged in resealable pouches to extend shelf life.

’We had in mind a “Sex in the City”-type girl, giving the packaging a neon effect to suggest a funky girl about town, although the product is for men too, of course,’ says Davies Leslie-Smith founding partner Tim Davies.

The website launched recently, but is still being tweaked, according to Davies.
