Design Council launches new website to ‘prepare for the future’

The Design Council has launched a new website, which it says is part of its strategy to ‘prepare ourselves for the future as a very different organisation to where we have been in the past’.

The new site has been designed by Numiko, and introduces a new colour system and responsive design. The site was written by Reed Words, working with the Design Council.

Matt Tweddle, head of design at Numiko, says, ‘The Design Council has some amazing content. We looked at what they had and completely overhauled the information architecture.

‘We put a focus on the user – previously the design had been based on the way that the Design Council was organised.

’We spent a lot of time during our discover phase working with the Design Council to understand their audience.’

The new site features content including News & Opinion, Projects and Knowledge & Resources.

Further sections – including a section on the Power of Design – are set to launch in coming weeks.

Numiko reduced the colour palette to a two-colour system. This is used in graphics throughout the site and will be used in infographics in the Power of Design section.

Tweddle says, ‘We really embraced the less-is-more principle. We didn’t want to clutter up the site.

‘We wanted to put all the Design Council’s great content at the centre of the website across all devices.’

Reed Words founder Mike Reed says, ‘It’s been a delight working on the Design Council’s new site. We’ve given the brand a fresher voice that fits better with their mission of championing great design.

‘Hopefully this will be a powerful platform for them to become an even more influential advocate for design in every sphere.’

John Mathers, chief executive of the Design Council, says, ‘We’ve been developing this for some time for a number of reasons. We need to prepare ourselves for the future as a very different organisation to where we have been in the past.’
