Design Museum to go ahead with move as Government grant slashed
The Design Museum says its future is secure and it will go ahead with its planned move to the Commonwealth Institute in 2014, despite the Government cutting the grant it gives to the organisation.
The Department for Culture, Media and Sport has cut its grant to the museum by 65 per cent up until 2015, when it is understood Government funding to the museum will cease completely. The Design Museum will now receive £900 000 of Government cash over the next four years.
In a letter sent to the Design Museum last month, Culture Secretary Jeremy Hunt said the museum would receive £328 000 in 2011-12, dropping to £168 000 in 2014-15. Hunt said this funding would go towards educational programmes at the museum.
A spokesman for the Design Museum says just 10 per cent of the museum’s annual £4m operating budget comes from the DCMS, adding, ‘We have a track record of raising our own funding, from sponsorship, admissions, ticket sales and retail.’
The spokesman adds, ‘There is absolutely no threat to the museum’s future and this does not affect our move. Having just secured Heritage Lottery Fund funding for the Commonwealth Institute, we are gearing up for the exciting move to our new home in 2014.’
