Design Museum to rebrand with £80 million move to Kensington

The Design Museum will look to refresh its visual identity as it moves to a new home in Kensington, west London, in 2016.

The museum will move to a new home in the former Commonwealth Building in an £80 million project that will see it triple in size and exhibit its permanent collection for free.

Design Museum head of communications and external affairs Josephine Chanter  says the museum will look to “refresh” its visual identity with the move, although no consultancy has been appointed to work on this yet.

Chanter says: “We will be continuing to build our design and creative pool over the next six months to a year.”

Consultancy Gravity Road has been appointed to create the launch campaign for the new Design Museum. Chanter says this campaign will roll out in 2016 and “will reflect the new visual identity”.

The interiors of the former Commonwealth Institute are being redesigned by architect John Pawson ahead of the move. The Design Museum is also working with Cartlidge Levene to develop signage for the new site, and Morag Myerscough to create the exhibition design.

Earlier this year the Design Museum launched a new website, created by Dutch consultancy Fabrique.
