Ecological artworks spring up in Secret Garden Project

The programme, commissioned by Up Projects, has been curated to enhance London’s green spaces. Up Projects assistant curator Sarah Davies says, ‘It’s very environment-led. We’ve taken the locations as starting points to lead into the commissions.’

The first project to launch will be Francis Thorburn’s Mobile Picnic Pavilion, which opens in Islington on 29 May. This is a mobile vegetable garden that will tour the borough, pulled by a band of performing gardeners.

Later in the summer Pleasure Garden for Birds, by collective London Fieldworks, will launch simultaneously in Duncan Terrace, Islington, and Cremorne Gardens, Chelsea.

In addition, Shane Waltener will create Garland #22 for Islington’s Tibbey Place around the ruins of the former Tibberton Baths, and Margot Bannerman will present Bus Stops for Bees, three Green bus stop roofs around the Archway area in Islington.

Further commissions will appear throughout the summer, along with literary works created for the Secret Garden website by writer in residence Sarah Butler.
