Ed Vaizey confirms Design Council merger with Cabe

Culture Secretary Ed Vaizey has indicated that the mooted merger between the Design Council and the Commission for Architecture and the Built Environment is set to go ahead.

Speaking at the first London Design Review yesterday, Vaizey said he was delighted that the Government had effected ‘a secure future for the Design Council and Cabe’.

There has been no official confirmation of any merger and details are yet to emerge of the role any combined body could play in design and architecture, but sources suggest the two bodies will pool some resources and share premises.

The London Design Review was organised by the London Design Festival team to establish what issues are affecting the design community in the capital and what initiatives and campaigns are necessary to maintain the city’s standing as a global design centre.

The session was documented by LDF and will be broadcast in due course. Whether this will take the form of a publication or a manifesto is yet to be decided, but the LDF plans to build on the findings for future events.

The review meeting was attended by luminaries from design and design education, representatives of creative industry membership bodies and key cultural figures. It is one of the first to receive cash from the £100 000 fund set up by the Design Council to support projects by not-for-profit organisations to promote the value of design.
