Entire King’s Cross foot tunnel will be immersive installation

Spiers + Major has designed an immersive light installation which will be installed into the fabric of the new King’s Cross foot tunnel, opening in London on 6 March.

Halflife is a site-specific work which uses light and colour to create “an evolutionary experience where no one moment is ever the same,” according to the consultancy.

Glazed walls on the inside of the 90m tunnels hide concealed light sources which create cycles of patterns moving from light to dark beginning with bold, dramatic forms which gradually become calmer until they disappear.

Sequences have been programmed so that the piece can “grow organically” according to Spiers + Major, which has used red, green and blue light in the installation.

Speirs + Major principal Keith Bradshaw says: “We have designed Halflife so that no two moments in the tunnel will be experienced the same. Each visitor will have their own perception of time and distance, immersed in light, dark and colour.”

The piece takes its name from the term half-life which is the amount of time required for a quantity to fall to half its value as measured at the beginning of the time period.

Spiers + Major says: “The term “half-life” can be used to describe any quantity, which follows an exponential decay.”
