Floating cinema planned for east London

Artist group Somewhere and architect Studio Weave are developing a floating cinema that will take to the waterways of east London next year.

The floating structure will host on-board film screenings and large-scale film events, and will tour the five 2012 Olympic host boroughs.

It is being developed as part of Up Projects’ Portavilion initiative and will form part of the Olympic Delivery Authority’s Create 11 summer festival.

Portavilion curator Emma Underhill says, ‘The canals and rivers provide a very tangible connection running through the five Olympic boroughs and into the Olympic Park itself, and offer a rich environment for the floating cinema to navigate.’

The floating cinema will be afloat from June to September 2011.
