Geffrye Museum seeks architect for new building

The Geffrye Museum in London is looking for an architect to work on the development of a new building as part of its The Museum of the Home project.

The museum focuses on the changing style of the English domestic interior, as well as the ideas, meanings and cultural values expressed by the home.

The Museum of the Home project, for which David Chipperfield Architects has created the masterplan, will include the design of a new two-storey building that aims to provide an extra 1500m2 to house the museum’s collections, a library and archive, study areas, exhibition space and conference facilities.

The project also included the creation of new entrances to the museum from Hoxton Stations and Kingsland Road, a new reception space, an enclosed glazed walkway leading from the new reception to the existing museum, and the design of a new restaurant.

The project aims to ease congestion in the existing museum and open up some of the collections and archives not currently on display. It is hoped that the project will be completed by 2015.
