Government advertising and consultancy spend to be slashed

Government spend on advertising, consultancy and travel is to be slashed by £1.15bn as part of cuts unveiled today.

Chancellor George Osborne and Chief Secretary to the Treasury David Laws have announced cuts totalling £6.243bn across Government in the first step towards rectifying the UK’s finances.

Osborne says the cuts to consultancy spend are ‘designed to send a shockwave through Government departments’.

Further cuts will be taken from quangos and regional development agencies, with Laws saying that quangos would have to make ‘major savings’.

Further measures are expected in the Emergency Budget scheduled for 22 June, and the Comprehensive Spending Review due in the autumn.
