Government funding cut for arts institutions

The University for the Creative Arts has had its annual central Government funding slashed by 7.8 per cent in the latest round of grant allocations from the Higher Education Funding Council for England.

University of the Arts London has seen a 4.4 per cent funding cut, Norwich University College of the Arts a 4.2 per cent cut, Ravensbourne a 3.8 per cent cut and the Royal College of Art a 3 per cent cut.

The latest Hefce allocations show funding cuts for nearly all UK higher education institutions, with most cuts ranging from 3-5 per cent.

The cuts also come as universities prepare to become more reliant on income from student fees, which are set to rise.

Sir Alan Langlands, chief executive of Hefce, says, ‘This is a challenging settlement for universities and colleges. In distributing the grant we have tried as far as possible to ensure a smooth transition to the new funding arrangements for higher education in 2012, when more public funding will be in the hands of students and less routed through Hefce grants.’

At the end of last year Business Secretary Vince Cable and Science Minister David Willetts announced that the total pot of cash Hefce would be able to allocate to UK universities for 2011-12 would drop by 6 per cent.
